Buying Loose Natural Diamonds: Questions to Ask Your Supplier
Buying a loose diamond, rather than a finished piece of jewellery, gives you full control over quality and design. It also means the decisions are yours. These are the questions worth asking any supplier before you buy.
1. Is the diamond natural, and does it have a grading report?
Ask for an independent grading report and check which laboratory issued it. The report should confirm the diamond is natural and list its carat weight, colour, clarity and cut.
2. Has the stone been treated?
Some diamonds are treated to improve their appearance, for example by laser drilling, fracture filling or high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) processing. Treatments must be disclosed and affect value, so always ask directly.
3. Can I see it under magnification and in natural light?
A good supplier will let you inspect the stone with a loupe and compare it against the report. Viewing a diamond in daylight and under different lighting shows its true colour and brilliance.
4. For several stones, how well do they match?
If you are buying pairs, side stones or a parcel for production, ask how closely the stones match in size, colour and clarity. Consistent stones save time and cost at the setting stage.
5. Is there a minimum order, and where are the stones sourced?
Some wholesalers only sell in large quantities. Ask about minimums up front, and ask where the stones come from. Buying closer to the source usually means better value.
6. What happens after the sale?
Clarify payment terms, shipping and insurance for international orders, and the policy on returns or exchanges before you commit.
